Rove

Rove watercolour case provides safe storage for art supplies on-the-go.

Project Overview: The brief for this project, was identifying areas where people commonly encounter disorganization or "clutter" and solving this with a product. My attention was specifically drawn to the realm of art supply management. Watercolor painting, in particular, demands a wide array of materials, and keeping them organized while ensuring easy access can be a cumbersome challenge. The objective of this project was to address this issue by designing a streamlined organizational system tailored to watercolor artists, one that not only fosters efficient storage but also enables the convenience of taking supplies on the go.

Duration: 4 Weeks

 Opportunity

I recognized an opportunity in the fact that watercolor painting requires a variety of materials, and managing them while maintaining easy access can be a challenging task. The question became: How could I create something that assisted a painter while creating art, that also kept their supplies orderly at all times.

Workspace

My process began by illustrating the ideal structure of a workspace for a watercolour painter. This was the basis for the design of the organizational system.

Ideation

During early ideation, concepts were developed through sketches and quick prototypes. They were aimed to explore different functionality and form, with a strong emphasis on how the user interacts with their workspace.

Prototyping

I brought my two favorite concepts to life through quick mockups, crafted from cardboard and paper. This process allowed me to evaluate the viability of the ideas and assess their scale.

Final Concept Sketches

After prototyping I decided to continue the development of Concept 1. The final concept sketches allowed me to create general dimensions, while also enabling me to conceptualize the assembly, color, material, and finish (CMF) aspects of the design.

Model Planning

In preparation for model making, I developed a refined prototype along with detailed assembly sketches.

Sewing

After creating a sewing pattern, I conducted a test run using scrap fabric to ensure no measurement adjustments were needed. The fabric acts as a living hinge within the design.

Assembly

Parts were assembled using rivets, hinges, and wood glue. Magnets were an additional feature that was implemented to add strength to the design in its closed orientation.

Final Model

Materials:
Plywood
Canvas
Leather
Snaps
Rivets
Hinges

Rove's material selections have been carefully curated for durability, designed to grow alongside the artist. Over time, the canvas will absorb the paint, becoming a unique reflection of the artists creative journey. Each kit tells the story of an artist, and evolves with every use.
